I walk out my front door and the dance is already in full swing. The air itself seems alive, electrified, with the sound of buzzing and the whirring of tiny wings. Something seems different today, though. Bumble Bees, true their name, are always a bit clumsy. Today, they almost seem… intoxicated. They fly this way and that, bumping into walls and windows, before they finally land on what appears to be their single focus. The beautiful purple Bee Balm. They cling to her as if she is life, pulling and shuffling through her thin and delicate petals, until they find what they are looking for. Sweet nectar. They plunge deep into the flower, head first, caring for nothing else. Only fuzzy legs and lacy iridescent wings are left to view. I reach down to touch one of them, feeling the soft yellow fuzz. He doesn’t seem to notice me. He is drowsy, fumbling, falling from flower to flower. It must be love.

I have seen them do this, and it’s funny to watch. You capture it well– “He is drowsy, fumbling, falling from flower to flower. It must be love.” Perfect.
I, personally, call it the Summer Bumble Dance. It has a ring to it, don’t you think?
Bumble Love?
Entranced by the intricacy of the ‘lacy’ iridescence of the wing and your visual and literal record of it! Such detail in both…
BUT…
You touched it?! I never knew you could do that!
Of course, that was before I knew we could play in rain puddles as grown folk!
Thanks.
Wow, what glorious close-ups you were able to get! I love seeing animals/insects up close, and am delighted that you were able to reach out and even touch the bee. Thanks!
You crazy girl! What were you thinking? Are you still that little girl that falls out of a house window? My, My, My! No wonder you have raised those wonderful kids that aren’t afraid of anything.
