When Katie was a toddler I wrote a song for her. It may be the only song I have ever written. (The rest of my family does the songwriting.) It came to me while I was sleeping, melody and all. When I think of the lyrics, I think of Katie as a child, so precious and sweet. She was show-stoppingly beautiful as a baby and everyone wanted to talk to her when we were out somewhere. I specifically remember a time when we went to the park and a small crowd gathered around to talk to our beautiful Katie. She entertained them with the grace of a princess.
Today Katie and I went walking at sunset. I treasure the time I get with her. She is a wonderful listener with a big heart. We both appreciate the beauty found in nature so we often stopped to notice things. There was no rush or agenda except to walk and enjoy the fresh air and sunshine. After our walk we continued our conversation over dinner. What a lovely evening with my Katie girl.
When I wrote the song for Katie I had no idea I was describing her love language which is quality time. I didn’t know God made her that way, but he tucked a song away for her to let her know she is loved. You are so loved, Katie Girl.
For the love of Katie, I’ll spend a day in the sunshine – strolling with five fingers around my one.
Or maybe we’ll sit splashing in the pool by the back porch. My curly-headed girl is so much fun.
Tiny fingers reach to touch life as it unfolds to her
her little legs will take her on her way
She came to us a helpless babe. Someday we’ll let her go.
For the love of Katie, for Katie is my love.
For the love of Katie, I’ll be sure to step more slowly- waiting for her stride to meet my own.
And I won’t mind repeating the names of all she brings to me. Daily how I see my Katie’s grown.
Tiny fingers reach to touch life as it unfolds to her
her little legs will take her on her way
She came to us a helpless babe. Someday we’ll let her go.
For the love of Katie, for Katie is my love.
And when I see her dancing all my cares go to the wind
And even when she stumbles I know we’ll laugh and try again
For the love of Katie I will let her walk alone, for baby girls grow up by and by
and for the love of Katie I will watch her from a distance. She’ll by my baby girl until I die.
Tiny fingers reach to touch life as it unfolds to her
her little legs will take her on her way
She came to us a helpless babe. Someday we’ll let her go.
For the love of Katie, for Katie is my love.
