I had it in my mind to photograph a grapefruit today, so I bought some fresh Ruby Reds at the store last night just in case I could. I just love the patterns in citrus fruit, and how they cheer my heart in the winter months. I confess, I had no idea how to properly photograph a grapefruit. Interestingly enough, there are no tutorials on this online. (I may have missed one, but I looked!) I did find a fabulous food photography site that made my mouth water. Food photography is truly an art, and one I do not know at all. So, after standing out on my cold back porch for an hour playing with grapefruit pieces (which are very slippery and sticky), this is what I came up with. It’s not amazing, but it will do.
The best part was seeing the intricate pattern inside a grapefruit. There are circles and triangles, lines and soft curves. Each tiny pulp is a translucent bubble of color and sweetness. God didn’t have to make our food beautiful, or smell delicious, but he did. He did because of his extravagant love for us. Every time I get close enough to truly study his world, I come to know this truth more deeply.
Today I saw it in a grapefruit.
Hungry now?
Genesis 1:29-31~
“Then God said, “I’ve given you
every sort of seed-bearing plant on Earth
And every kind of fruit-bearing tree,
given them to you for food.
To all animals and all birds,
everything that moves and breathes,
I give whatever grows out of the ground for food.”
And there it was.
God looked over everything he had made;
it was so good, so very good!
It was evening, it was morning—
Day Six.” (The Message)

I love grapefruit! If you are on cholesterol medicine, you are not suppose to eat grapefruit. I had really missed it for a long time. My doctor recently told me that I didn’t need to take the medicine anymore so the first thing I did was to go to the grocery store and buy some grapefruit. Yeah!
I think a lot about what you said – that God didn’t have to make our food beautiful or delicious, but He did. He could have made seasons of the year still functional without all the beauty. He could have put an ugly gray ozone layer around our planet that would have still served its purpose, but He put a beautiful blue one. He could have arranged for watering the earth in winter in a functional way that did not include beauty, but He gave us snow. His heart is beautiful. His mind exquisite. His intentions toward us are always to bless – extravagantly.
Beautiful…..the pictures are so amazing. God has given us so much more than we can even realize. Thank you for helping so many of us see the beauty of His world.
Your photography is amazing. Thank you for once again showing us Gods love in this way.
Beautimous, as my mother used to say.
