365 2014 Day 34 Cabbage Portrait

Yes, I stayed up late photographing a cabbage tonight. At midnight I was standing in my kitchen with a light setup, a lovely cabbage and water in a spray bottle.  All this after texting with a photographer friend who is getting ready to photograph someone famous.  “Well, I am photographing a cabbage” I texted in reply. She laughed.  She knows this is what I do.

It’s okay. I have a love affair with cabbages. Yes, they are one of the cheapest vegetables and they are quite unremarkable at first glance, but I cannot help but stare at them in the produce section when the water hits them. There is something magical that happens when water and cabbage meet. It makes me want to fill my cart with them and run out of the store (after I pay for them of course.) Sometimes I will Instagram them right there in the grocery store with other shoppers looking on in surprise.

Tonight I brought them home and gave them a proper portrait session. This also afforded me the opportunity to practice my lighting skills. I am yearning to learn the art of the moody portrait, and sometimes all I have is a cabbage with which to practice. Does this cabbage look melancholy to you? If so, then I am making progress.

Look at the beauty and intricate detail in this sweet little cabbage. God is so kind. His heart is always to bless. We just have to stop and let the wonder in.

Psalm 65:8

“Far and wide they’ll come to a stop,
they’ll stare in awe, in wonder.
Dawn and dusk take turns
calling, “Come and worship.” (The Message)

You’re amazing! Every day I’ve wanted to thank you for doing the 365 again….and the cabbage forced me to do it! You add blessings, beauty, honesty and encouragement to each day.
I’m very grateful… for you, your talents, for you being a receptive vessel & avenue for God’s words and beauty.

You are so gifted. What you photograph is not the point but what is behind the portrait, that makes the picture come alive.

“The time has come,” the Walrus said,
    “To talk of many things:
    Of shoes–and ships–and sealing-wax–
    Of cabbages–and The Queen!
