Katie came home today and said that there was to be a “Super Moon” tonight. I had not heard of it, but I was instantly excited about it. Evidently, this means that the Moon was going to be the closest to earth tonight that is has been in 18 years. The last time this happened was in March of 1993. The year and month my Johnny was born. Looks like he gets a “super moon” for his 18th birthday. There are some really amazing shots of it at this link. I wish that I could have seen it when it was low on the horizon, swollen and orange like in some of those pictures. I did however, get to see the brightness of it. It is like daylight outside.
I went out around midnight when the tree frogs were at the peak of their trilling. The dogs followed me out and settled around my feet as I set up my tripod. I could hear the horses stepping softly through the pasture behind me. A perfect night.
After a few shots using the tripod, I walked over and leaned against the fence to steady my camera for the slow shutter speed. It wasn’t long before I felt the warm breath of my horse, Gunsmoke, on my neck. I laughed and kept shooting. He is such a curious horse. He didn’t stop there. Within moments he was full on leaning on my shoulder with his head, snuggling into me, breathing in my ear. ” Stop, Gunsmoke,” I pleaded still laughing, but he could not be persuaded. His soft nose tickled my neck and I could not hold my camera steady. He nibbled my camera strap. Finally I just gave up and hugged him in return, breathing in his scent of green grass and sunshine. It was such a sweet moment. I didn’t get a lot of moon shooting done, but I did enjoy the process.
Here are a few more of the brilliant “super moon”.
The one below reminds me of this scripture.
Psalm 139:12 ~ “even the darkness will not be dark to you; the night will shine like the day, for darkness is as light to you”.

I was captivated by the moon yesterday. I had no idea it had a special name! Thank you for sharing; I believe that verse fits it very well 🙂
