It was the color of Kings. Purple. Royalty. They draped it around Him in mockery and thrust a crown of thorns into His brow, unaware that He was the King of Glory.
He said nothing. His mind was set.
He could have called all of Heaven to rescue, to proclaim the truth. Instead, He let them scorn and mock Him, as they hammered Him into a tree. A cross.
I thought about these things as I knelt below this cross in town, trying to photograph it’s silhouette against the sky, the purple cloth billowing like a banner. I sensed Him there, as I bowed in the shadow of the cross. I could say nothing. My heart filling and spilling over into itself, nearly bursting. My card nearly full, I walked back to my car and began the drive home, taking the scenic route. Slowly, their sparkling, saturated shapes came into view. There, on the side of the road. I pulled into a nearby parking lot and ran over to them. Again more purple. Happy purple!
Wisteria. Even the name of this flowering plant sounds dreamy, mysterious. Inviting.
I sensed a theme here, as the King of Glory, Jesus, majestic One, was shining through all creation. His true royalty being proclaimed by intricate, intoxicating flowers. Oh, to wander through the Wisteria! The scent alone is truly heavenly.
As the sun shone through the open blooms, I again sensed God’s presence. Joy this time! The cross, the grave, could not hold Him. He is alive and so very present. Sweet Wisteria. Tell the tale again.

These images are breathtaking. Those thin rays of sun shining down onto “sweet wisteria.” Stunning, Mary Ann. So beautiful. Now, during this season of Lent, I’ll see wisteria and let it tell me that tale again. They did nail Him to a tree and mocked him. And He wore that cloak of purple that they thought would shame Him…He did it for us…He let them do that…for us…didn’t he? Oh my, your images of the red dripping off the dogwood was even more profound and I forgot to comment on that day. Thank you for all of the reminders. Are you sure your husband is the only one who went to seminary? You have quite a ministry yourself! The love of Christ absolutely shines right through your words and pictures….
